Past First Ladies
Anyone
raised in the South
knows, and even
newcomers soon find out,
that Southern politics
is as much in the
spotlight as our winning
football tradition. Many
flamboyant politicians
have walked the halls of
Southern capitols, and
Alabama is no exception.
Being governor in our
state carries a lot of
attention, but what
about the role of first
lady? Although she acts
as the state’s official
hostess and has many
responsibilities, often
little is known about
the governor’s wife.
This is especially true
of Alabama’s earliest
first ladies.
Fortunately for the
citizens of Alabama, we
have one of the
country’s best archives
departments that is
dedicated to preserving
our state’s rich
history. Among the
countless records kept,
the department has
maintained a collection
of portraits of some of
Alabama’s earliest
governor’s wives.
As Alabama’s most recent
first lady, I am proud
to share this collection
with you. Please enjoy
this glimpse into the
past of the women who
played an important role
in both their husband’s
careers and the state’s
history. |
